Keystone Heights mosquitoes test positive for West Nile Virus

You’ll see extra mosquito spraying and treatment in Keystone Heights- Clay County confirms samplings of mosquitoes in that area have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

At this time, the County says there have been no human cases of the virus. To prevent the spread of WNV, the County will be taking some action and is urging you to protect yourself.

Anyone in the area is urged to drain any standing water around your home- like in planters and wheelbarrows- to prevent mosquito breeding. You should also avoid being outdoors if possible around dawn and dusk, wear long clothing when outside in order to shield your skin, and use an insect repellant containing DEET. You should additionally check the screens on your windows and doors to ensure mosquitoes can’t get in your home.

The County says Mosquito Control will have elevated operations until there are no further positive samples of WNV. They will be frequently conducting truck spraying operations, inspecting property, treating potential breeding areas, increasing adult mosquito surveillance, and distributing educational material.

The CDC says most people infected with WNV do not show symptoms, but about 20% of patients will have a fever and other problems like joint pain, headaches, and a rash. Fatigue and weakness could potentially last for weeks. In extreme cases, the virus could develop in to central nervous system problems.
