Man arrested for passing counterfeit money in Orange Park

Charles Coriaty

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is looking for other potential victims of a man caught passing off counterfeit money at the Orange Park Mall.

24-year-old Charles Coriaty has been arrested for allegedly using a fake $100 bill to make small purchases at two stores in the Mall. CCSO says this kind of practice is common, with suspects using fake money to get real money in return as change on their purchase. Coriaty’s arrest report says he was actually turned away at two other stores in the Mall who suspected the money was counterfeit.

The Sheriff’s Office is now looking for any other vendors who may have interacted with the suspect to see if he successfully passed off counterfeit money anywhere else.

Coriaty tried to tell the clerks at the stores that the money felt weird because his girlfriend had washed it. One of the clerks who accepted the transaction realized it was a counterfeit soon after, sending out Mall security, who was able to track Coriaty down.

His arrest report says he did speak with deputies, but his statements have been redacted.
