A man convicted in a 1994 murder in Jacksonville Beach is scheduled to be executed tomorrow at 6 p.m., according to the Florida Department of Corrections.
Investigators say Gary Bowles also confessed to killing five other people from Florida to Maryland.
Walter Hinton of Jacksonville Beach was his final victim, and it was the crime Bowles received the death sentence for, according to court records.
Bowles confessed to killing his victims over an eight-month stretch but was only convicted for Hinton’s murder. Prosecutors say the others were in Nassau County, Volusia County, Georgia and Maryland.
Bowles and Hinton met in Jacksonville Beach in November 1994, according to investigators, and Bowles offered to help move some things for Hinton from Georgia to his home here. Hinton let Bowles live with him in return.
Investigators say when Hinton was sleeping, Bowles dropped a concrete block on his head and then strangled him.
Based on evidence from Hinton’s death and the other cases, authorities believe Bowles went after gay men.
