Jacksonville FL — On Monday, work is set to begin on a rehabilitation project on the Mathews Bridge in downtown Jacksonville. The Florida Department of Transportation says this project will include steel rehabilitation and some painting on the iconic red bridge.
Hampton Ray with FDOT says the majority of the work with this $8.1-million project will be about steel rehabilitation.
“While the work is going on and taking place, motorists can expect a normal commute”. Ray says.
He says lane closures on the bridge will not be scheduled during peak drive times, like the morning or afternoon drive, or when special events are taking place in the area. You can expect to see single-lane closures during the evening time. Most of the work is set to take place from a barge.
“As part of the rehabilitation, crews will be replacing some of the steel rivets on the truss”. Ray says.
This project is expected to be completed during the summer of next year.
