JACKSONVILLE, Fla — Members of the Jacksonville City Council announce two town halls to discuss the city’s recycling situation. The first will take place on Monday at the West Branch Library at 6:45 P.M. The second will take place on February 15th at Chapel Hall at Arlington Baptist Church at 7:00 P.M.
“We want it to be a civil conversation. It’s not an easy problem to solve, but we’re going to solve it.” said Councilman Matt Carlucci. “I’m just trying to shine some light on it, so the public knows what the problems are.” Carlucci added he chose those two areas because “they’ve been hit the hardest.”
In the announcement, Carlucci said in a statement “Solid waste services remain a major concern. This as a two-fold problem: (1) addressing labor market issues with our haulers and (2) addressing debt incurred due to solid waste fees only covering 70 to 80 percent of the cost of services. I would like to see a rate review process expedited.”
The statements also said the City Council has not raised the solid waste fee since 2010 and because of that, the city has a loan that will reach $31 million this fiscal year.
Curbside recycling services have been suspended since October.
