The suspect has been identified by JSO as Devonn A. Thompson, a 15-year-old male. He sustained injuries after being shot twice in the lower body, and a bullet grazed his head. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department transported Thompson to a local hospital in serious condition to address his traumatic injuries.
Thompson now faces multiple charges, including discharging a firearm on school property and carrying a concealed firearm.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office had received information from the School Board Police about a potential large altercation anticipated at the First Coast High School football game that evening.
According to JSO, at around 8:56 p.m., two JSO officers were engaged in a routine traffic stop and apprehended two individuals for illegal possession of firearms. Notably, one of the confiscated firearms was reportedly fully automatic.
While the officers were processing the arrests, the nearby football game concluded, resulting in a surge of attendees flooding the parking lot, resulting in a large fight breaking out.
JSO indicated that Thompson, who was later shot, was among the crowd and began firing shots into the incoming mass of people.
Officers managed to capture Thompson’s attention and urged him to drop his weapon. Despite their commands, the suspect allegedly attempted to flee the scene.
A pursuit ensued as officers fired multiple shots while Thompson ran through a wooded area and over a fence. The suspect successfully crossed a nearby street but was ultimately apprehended and placed in handcuffs.
The suspect was reportedly shot two times, one in the lower body and a graze to the skull.
As JSO delves into the investigation, questions remain about the motive behind the suspect’s decision to open fire on the crowd. Action News Jax is working to learn more information.
JSO released a social media post on their Twitter (X) account that officers were on the scene of an officer-involved shooting near the intersection of Starratt Road and Duval Station Road.
