JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Final preparations are underway for the NAS JAX Air Show, where the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and U.S. Navy Blue Angels will perform at the same event for the first time in the show’s history.

“It’s a rare treat,” NAS JAX Commanding Officer Capt. Ryan Dexter said.

Gates open tomorrow at 9 a.m., and the show begins at 11 a.m. Dexter urged spectators to arrive early and prepare for heavy traffic and large crowds.

“Come early, be courteous and be patient because we’re expecting huge crowds,” Dexter said.

Once drivers enter the base, they will be directed to the nearest available parking space. NAS JAX will post an update on Facebook if parking fills up.

Officials said there will be no shade for spectators and recommended bringing sunscreen and a personal umbrella. Coolers will not be allowed on the base.

Tim Kirby, who has traveled from the Florida Panhandle to attend the air show for years, said the traffic and lack of shade will not keep him away.

“Some people can come later on during the daytime and see it, but honestly, I want to get first-row seats to see them,” Kirby said. “So it’s well worth the wait. It really is.”
