Two teens killed in Northside shooting

A shooting on Jacksonville’s Northside kills two people, and police have identified both victims as teens.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says Christopher Carter Mikell, 17, and Malcom Tyrod Belt, 18, were victims of a double homicide Monday.

“We’re asking the community for their support so we can stop this violence,” says JSO Lieutenant Elliz Burns, who is with the Violent Crime Impact Team.

JSO was called to 2nd Avenue shortly before 2 PM for shots fired. JSO found one victim dead in the street. The other victim had been driven to Lem Turner Road and Rowe Avenue- presumably in route to the hospital- where they stopped and got the help of an off-duty police officer, but that victim died as well.

“It’s disturbing any time of the day, but it’s especially disturbing when children are getting out of school,” Burns says.

JSO says it’s unclear right now how many suspects there are, how many shots were fired, and how the victims are connected. Police are investigating whether this was motivated by gang activity, saying now only that it was a “possible gun battle”.  The person who drove the second victim to get help is being cooperative.

“We’re not sure how exactly it started, but we’re out here to put the pieces of the puzzle together,” Burns says.

If you have any information about this shooting and those involved, you’re asked to contact JSO at 904-630-0500. You can also submit an anonymous tip and be eligible for a possible reward by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
