UNF fraternity jacket hanging in tree sparks possible hate crime investigation

Picture sparks hate-crime investigation at UNF

Students at the University of North Florida are disturbed after they say someone hung up a fraternity jacket in a tree, using a noose.

The jacket belongs to the Sigma Beta Rho fraternity, a multicultural frat on campus.

“It surprises me. I don’t expect this from our school,” said Stephanie Rappisi, a UNF junior.

Right now, campus police tell us a possible hate crime investigation is underway.

We’re told their investigation is leading them to believe a disgruntled frat member may be responsible. However, they say based on the jacket's ties to a multicultural fraternity they can't rule anything out yet.

“We’re investigating it as a hate crime, hoping to eliminate it along the way,” said UNF police Chief Frank Mackesy.

This local incident comes at the same time other schools are dealing with tension.

The president and chancellor of the University of Missouri resigned on Monday amid accusations they were not doing enough to address racism on campus.

UNF police said the true reason behind this multicultural fraternity’s jacket hanging from a tree isn't clear yet.
