A truck driver in his 40's died after a 15,000 pound concrete slab fell on him at the construction site for tolled express lanes on the West Beltway.
It happened Thursday afternoon off I-295 between Old St. Augustine Road and San Jose.
OSHA Assistant Area Director Bud Underwood tells WOKV News the truck driver had already lifted one of the slabs off the truck.
"Had moved the truck forward and was prepping to move the second panel off his truck. What we're being told is he loosened the rachet strap that was holding the slab in place and the slab fell and landed on top of him", said Underwood.
The slabs are being put in place as a sound barrier for people living along I-295 between Old St. Augustine Road and San Jose Blvd.
FDOT says, at this time, it's unclear what the impact will be on the ongoing construction project.
We're being told several companies are working on the project. OSHA says Prince is the general contractor. The trucker was delivering for Concrete Impressions of Florida. GAI Consultants is the engineering consultant.
It's still unclear what company the trucker worked for. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has not publicly identified the man yet.
Construction at the site has paused for now, but Underwood says OSHA has not issued a work stoppage, so it's likely the project will continue in the coming days.
