Kids are getting back on the sports fields and doing other after-school activities, so our Consumer Warrior Clark Howard is weighing in on the best ways to keep track of where they are.
Clark says there’s no need to give young kids a cellphone with all the bells and whistles. He says you have another option.
“There are watches that are phones for kids,” Clark says.
He says they allow parents to monitor where their children are without giving them access to a phone with full internet access or the ability to call anyone they want. Clark says the only numbers the phone can dial are pre-programmed contacts and 911.
“Older kids though, they’re going to want a full-featured cellphone,” Clark says.
He says the best option for that is through T-Mobile. The provider was forced to create the option when it took over Sprint, and Clark says for $15 a month you can get a prepaid phone with unlimited talk and text.
Clark says the phone only has two gigabytes of data, but that’s all your kid will need since there’s usually a wi-fi option available.
There is a catch those. Clark says T-Mobile won’t just tell you about the deal, and you’ll have to look for it yourself.
