JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man is dead and another man is fighting for his life after their car crashed into a tree in the 6800 block of Southpoint Parkway Thursday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
JSO said they were called to Southpoint Parkway around 8:50 a.m. in reference to a single-vehicle crash.
When police arrived at the scene, they found two men in a Mazda 3 seriously injured. Both men were transferred to the hospital. The driver of the vehicle is in critical condition and the passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital, JSO said.
Through investigations, police found that the two men were driving in the northwestern direction on Southpoint Parkway, and for unknown reasons the car jumped the median and collided with a tree.
JSO says that neither of the men were wearing a seatbelt.
Speeding or reckless driving is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
The officer on scene said that “if seatbelts had been used there may have not been a fatality.” JSO is encouraging the community of Jacksonville to buckle up to save lives.
This is the 146th traffic death in Duval County in 2021.
