2002 Jacksonville cold case solved, as man turns himself in

Kenny Maxwell (JSO)

Jacksonville, FL — A man has confessed to a 2002 murder in Jacksonville, and police say he came to their headquarters and turned himself in. There had not been a suspect identified in connection to the case, which was considered cold.

In January 2002, Rochard Morrison was found dead in his room at the Palms Boarding House on North Market Street. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says there was evidence a fight had taken place and some of the victim’s items were missing. It was determined by the Medical Examiner that Morrison died by strangulation, and his death was considered a homicide.

JSO says they were not able to identify any suspects, so the investigation turned in to a cold case.

Now, police say 41-year-old Kenny Maxwell has turned himself in. JSO says he showed up at the Police Memorial Building late last week and has since given a full confession to what happened. JSO is not saying at this point if Maxwell has given any indication why he decided to turn himself in.

The victim and Maxwell were acquaintances, according to JSO.

Maxwell is being investigated for any other possible crimes as well, and JSO says they’re re-examining this case to determine if they believe anyone else was involved.
