The driver who had a road sign slice through the roof of his car is improving at the hospital.

We confirmed at 10am through a Shands Hospital spokesman that 63 year-old Leslie Richard Newton is in serious condition.  He was originally reported in critical condition following the crash Sunday night at 9:50pm.

Newton was driving on State Road 16 near First Street when his car hit the center curb, went across the median, and hit several plastic reflectors and a road sign.

One road sign fell through the driver side t-top of his Camaro and hit him in the head.

Police say Newton kept driving until a St. Johns County Deputy saw what happened and pulled him over.

The crash report from Florida Highway Patrol says alcohol was a factor in the crash.  It does not ssay whether charges are pending.
