Jacksonville, FL — Nearly nine months after a deadly shooting in St. Augustine, an arrest has been announced. St. Johns County deputies arrested 23-year-old Jonathan Oxendine for manslaughter on Tuesday.
Oxendine identified himself as the shooter last June during some kind of disturbance near RJ Murray Middle School, according to deputies. He even turned over his gun and concealed weapon permit at the scene.
What may have motivated the shooting is not clear according to the arrest warrant. A summary of the events provided by the Sheriff’s Office says deputies arrived to Santorium Avenue and Hurst Street on June 23, 2018 after receiving multiple 911 calls about a shooting.
Deputies encountered a large crowd of people who had potentially been in the area at the time of the shooting, or at an earlier disturbance, which had occurred about an hour earlier. While attempting to restore order and secure the scene, deputies made contact with Oxendine, who identified himself as the shooter. Deputies released Oxendine at the scene pending further review by the State Attorney’s Office.
The shooting victim, Darrell Jenkins, was driven in a private vehicle to Fire Station 14, then was taken to Flagler Hospital where he died.
A Grand Jury returned an indictment for one count of manslaughter, leading to Oxendine’s arrest. He was booked into the St. Johns County Jail Tuesday on a $250,000 bond.
