Backup QBs Mullens, Aguilar, Bradley; LBs Kiser, Abdullah among players cut by Jaguars to get to 53

The Jacksonville Jaguars made two trades and waived three recent draft picks to highlight the annual task of getting the team’s roster to 53 players.

A day after trading for quarterback Quinn Ewers with the Miami Dolphins, the Jaguars not surprisingly cut backup Nick Mullens.

On Sunday, the Jaguars traded tight end Hunter Long to the Arizona Cardinals for a sixth-round pick in 2028.

A year ago, General Manager James Gladstone drafted linebackers Jack Kiser (4th round) and Jalen McLeod (6th round) and today, the team waived both of them. The Jaguars also departed with former fifth-round pick and special teams ace Yasir Abdullah.

Offensive lineman Patrick Mekari, who signed a lucrative deal with the Jaguars last year, was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return after a minimum of a four-game absence.

It’s been reported that Mekari had back surgery in the offseason. Zach Durfee, a seventh-round defensive end selection in May, also was assigned to the injured reserve with a designation to return.

The story of August was probably defensive end Bryan Thomas, Jr. The undrafted free agent punctuated a good camp with two and a half sacks in Friday’s preseason finale to clinch his spot on the 53-man roster.
