There are two scams that frequently target utility customers nationwide that Beaches Energy wants to make sure you know about.

They say bill payment scammers will often make unsolicited phone calls to customers claiming to be a representative of a utility company. Your utility company's phone number may even show up on your caller ID, but the scammers can be using an app that mimics the number.

The scam is to threaten the customer, telling them the power will be turned off if a payment isn't made immediately using a prepaid money card purchased at retail stores or pharmacies.

You will be asked to call back with the card and pin number.

Beaches Energy says you should never make payments to anonymous callers, and always try to get their name, phone number and any other information you can.

They say you should call Beaches Energy's emergency number to report the scam at (904) 247-6171 or the police at (904) 270-1661.

The second scam involves unsolicited energy audits.

Beaches Energy says you’ll get a call or someone may even show up at your door offering free home energy audits without an appointment. Then they'll try to sell you energy-related services or equipment.

First, you should never allow someone in your home if you haven't initiated the appointment. If you did initiate the appointment, always check for identification.

Beaches Energy says they offer free home energy audits to help save money and energy, but they will not try to sell equipment or added services.

For questions on energy conservation or equipment you can call a Beaches Energy specialist at (904) 247-6241 for free advice.
