JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — 9:15 AM: Three children are dead after a fire at a townhome early Wednesday. Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department crews were dispatched to the home in the 4400 block of Windergate Drive at about 5:13 a.m.
JFRD Chief Percy Golden II said crews arrived four minutes later and learned that two adults and two children were able to escape the home. As firefighters battled the blaze they encountered heavy flames and smoke in the two-story home, Golden said at a news conference Wednesday morning.
Three children were found dead inside of the residence, Golden said. The four people who escaped are being treated at the hospital for critical injuries, Golden said.
Two other homes at the location were also impacted. The American Red Cross is assisting with seven adults and six children who are displaced as a result of the fire, Golden said.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the state fire marshal.

6:30 AM: Action News Jax is working to learn more about a fire Wednesday morning at a home in Mandarin. The scene, located in the 4400 block of Windergate Drive, is blocked off with police tape and remains active with first responders.
The American Red Cross told Action News Jax it has been notified and it’s sending a disaster response team to assist a family.
