Jacksonville, FL — All of Jacksonville’s bridges are now open.
Westbound lanes on the Intracoastals were briefly opened Monday afternoon to assist with evacuations, with significant flooding expected, but they were closed again because of conditions at the beaches. The Intracoastals include JTB, Beach, Atlantic, and Wonderwood.
Now, those are open, in addition to the Hart Bridge, Mathews Bridge, Main Street Bridge, Acosta Bridge, Dames Point Bridge, and Buckman Bridge. All of those spans had closed due to high wind speeds from Hurricane Irma. Before they were reopened, they had to be inspected for any damage.
The St. Johns County Emergency Management has also announced a select number of bridges closed in the county due to Hurricane Irma. We’re told the bridges will remain closed until at least noon Tuesday because of “extensive damage” on the barrier islands, including flooding, downed power lines, and blocked roadways.
The Vilano Bridge, Bridge of Lions, State Road 312 Bridge, State Road 206 Bridge, Shands Bridge, and Palm Valley Bridge. They will remain closed until the barrier islands have been assessed, and FDOT inspects the approaches and bridges and deems them safe for you to drive over. The Shands Bridge closure also affects Clay County.
The bridges were initially shut down because of winds sustained at 40 miles per hour.
