The Confederate monument is no longer in the Plaza de la Constitution in the heart of St. Augustine as crews slowly move it to the Trout Creek Fish Camp.
Today’s portion of the journey went off without any issues, but now it has to be taken by water to its final location. The Trout Creek Fish Camp is just 18 miles away by land, but the monument is taller than originally thought so that would involved stopping traffic and taking down power lines.
“We are in no rush,” says Jeremy Patterson with Progressive Construction.
He says they’ll be moving the monument onto a barge and then north to the Intracoastal Waterway before getting to the St. Johns River and back south again. In all, the journey will be roughly 77 miles by water.
“The biggest challenge is going to be the tide,” Patterson says.
Tomorrow’s window to move the monument onto the barge is from noon to 3 p.m., and if they don’t make it the tide won’t be right for the move.
