Five hundred jobs have been cut in Jacksonville.
We first reported last month that CSX was planning to lay off 1,000 management level employees, and that most would be in Jacksonville. The company now confirms to WOKV that they actually eliminated a total of 800 positions, 500 of which were in Jacksonville. This "involuntary separation program" was completed this week.
A CSX Spokesman says about half of the Jacksonville employees who were cut were eligible for retirement, and opted to take an enhanced severance package.
“These were all difficult decisions. Each of the employees made important contributions, and we are grateful for their service and dedication,” says a statement from CSX Spokesman Gary Sease.
The company says the cuts are about increasing efficiency and accelerating progress.
The announcement that layoffs were imminent came as CSX's President and CEO both announced their retirements would be effective May 31. A President was appointed at that time, and in the interim weeks, a new CEO was named as well.
