Jacksonville, FL — The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is getting a big boost from the US Department of Transportation to expand low or no emission bus services.
The department's Federal Transit Administration has awarded JTA a $1 million grant to go toward the implementation of electric bus and solar powered charging stations in Northeast Florida.
JTA says it's been steadily diversifying its fleet, by incorporating Hybrid and Compressed Natural Gas buses, and that this grant will help initiate an electric bus program, including needed infrastructure.
"JTA is committed to capturing the promise of new and emerging technology that enhances performance and sustainability of our fleet," says JTA Chief Executive Officer Nathaniel P. Ford Sr.
We're told as part of the electric bus program, charging stations will be installed at the new Armsdale Park-n-Ride lot and at the Myrtle Avenue Campus.
The initial service will also support shuttle service to the new Amazon Fulfillment Center Warehouse on Pecan Park Road.
JTA says the charging stations will utilize a Solar Smart Power program, allowing the buses to have truly zero emissions.
