JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — JEA says several heavy rain events in the last few weeks have impacted flooding in residential areas.

They are conducting more smoke tests to check for problem areas in sewer systems.

Greg Corcoran, the JEA community outreach director, says JEA testing is a way for the company to make sure sewers are clear of blockages.

“We’re conducting what is called preventative maintenance, or testing on our sewer systems.”

Normally, seeing smoke billowing from your house is typically not a good thing. But JEA says this smoke test is a routine maintenance check.

“It allows us to check our systems to see if there are any issues,” he says.

The smoke is first pumped in through a manhole. Crews then watch the impacted homes, looking for smoke in areas where it shouldn’t be. If they find problems, they can get ahead of the issue.

“We’ll send out our crews to do a smoke test to see where there might be those problems with that water entering our system, and then we will make those repairs,” they say.

The smoke itself is not dangerous. It’s the same product you’d find in a nightclub or fog machine.

JEA says these maintenance events can prevent greater damage in the future.
