Jacksonville, FL — The State Fire Marshal is investigating how a fire started in a portable classroom at Wilkinson Elementary School in Middleburg.
The fire was called in via 911 by a passing motorist who smelled smoke. Clay County Firefighters arrived and found one portable classroom fully involved and three others were threatened. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire before it could spread. Surrounding portables sustained little damage, according to the Clay Fire Office.
No injuries were reported. John Ward, Clay County Division of Emergency Management Director, says it is unknown whether the fire was suspicious or accidental.
The portable that appears to have been destroyed was used as a 6th Grade English Language Arts classroom, according to Clay County School District Spokesperson Nicole Snyder.
“Another classroom has been identified and there will be no impact to overall operations”, Snyder said.
The District is currently determining the overall financial impact.
