NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Beachgoers in Nassau County got up close and personal with a hammerhead shark Saturday afternoon.
Sharon Skipper told Action News Jax she was swimming in the water at the time when someone in her party spotted a fin in the water.
Skipper took to Facebook Live to record the extra large catch. She believes the fishermen were specifically looking to catch sharks because they were ready with a large tape measure, which they used to measure the shark before releasing it back into the water.
The hammerhead is a protected species according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. It is a non-harvestable fish that must be thrown back into the water immediately after catching it.
