Florida congressman pushing workforce development when colleagues return from break

Former Jacksonville sheriff appointed to newly-created counterterrorism task force U.S. Rep. John Rutherford (R) is a former Sheriff in Jacksonville. He was elected to Congress in 2016.

Jacksonville, FL — Florida Republican Congressman John Rutherford believes when the U.S. Congress returns to work after Easter break, workforce development should be a priority as a follow-up to historic tax cuts passed last year.

“Workforce development is going to be critically important moving forward. Now that the tax cut and jobs act has really lifted our economy, businesses are starting to grow and invest, giving raises and bonuses,” says Rutherford.

He says workforce development dovetails right into the DACA issue. He believes the growing need for immigrant labor will require more workers. He favors issuing green cards to DACA “dreamers” but says they then will need to get to the back of the line for a forward path to citizenship.

Rutherford hopes to help veterans find good paying jobs once their military service is finished. A veterans’ jobs program called “Operation New Uniform” will get some funding from a provision Rutherford included in the TAP bill (Transition Assistance Program).
