This year’s back-to-school sales tax holiday in Florida goes back to the regular three days and includes less items than last year.
The holiday starts Friday and lasts the entire weekend, unlike last year which lasted ten days. Computers are not on the list of tax-free items either.
Shoppers this year will pay no tax on shoes or clothing worth $60 or less and on school supplies worth $15 or less. Last year shoppers could buy clothing worth $100 or less without paying taxes.
Florida Retail Federation spokesman James Miller says a shorter holiday this year likely means larger crowds at the stores. He says the tax-free weekend is the second biggest shopping holiday in Florida behind Black Friday.
“If you have an idea what the Black Friday crowd are like, it’s not that bad but still pretty crowded,” Miller says.
Look for some stores to offer additional deals on top of the tax-free savings.
“If they’re smart, retailers will piggyback on top of the sales tax savings with additional savings and additional discounts,” he says.
