JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — James Darrell Hickox was sentenced to 17 years and 6 months in prison for multiple federal offenses, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

According to a news release, court documents reveal Hickox was employed as a deputy with the Nassau County Sheriff’s and designated Task Force Officer with the Drug Enforcement Administration. During his career, he was a “co-conspirator engaged in extensive corrupt activity” from 2017 to 2023.
This activity includes the following:
- theft of money and illegal drugs that were seized as evidence during criminal investigations
- providing illegal drugs (including fentanyl and cocaine) to others to distribute on his behalf
- hiding from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) more than $420,000 in cash he had received because of his criminal activities

The State Attorney’s Office said Hickox helped steal more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana and a kilogram of cocaine from evidence. He then had others sell the drugs for him.
When law enforcement searched Hickox’s home in Mar. 2023, they found drugs, unlawful guns, and more than $195,000 in cash proceeds from his illegal activities.
Hickox pled guilty on May 15, 2024.
