Former pediatric dentist assistant arrested for child abuse

Dr. Howard S. Schneider Dr. Howard S. Schneider was arrested Monday, Nov. 16, 2016, on 11 counts of Medicaid fraud.

A former Southside pediatric dentist has been arrested for Medicaid fraud, and now his former assistant is accused of practicing without a license.

We first told you Monday about the arrest of 78-year-old Dr. Howard Schneider. He faces 11 counts of Medicaid provider fraud of $10,000 or less, and if found guilty could face up to 55 years in prison.

Now one of Schneider’s former assistants, LaTosha Bevel-Hillsman, has been arrested. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and Florida Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit say she allegedly practiced dentistry without a license- even performing an extraction on a child, which she was not authorized to do. Bevel-Hillsman is also charged with child abuse because the procedure caused harm to the child, as well as Medicaid provider fraud for producing unauthorized claims for reimbursement, according to the AG’s office.

Bevel-Hillsman could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted of these felony charges.

Schneider gave up his license to practice in May, after parents came forward in April with claims he had hurt their children. Protesters picketed outside of his office for weeks until he closed it.
