George Winterling, a long-time meteorologist at our news partner channel 4 and the man credited with inventing the heat index, has been hospitalized.
Channel 4 reports that Winterling is "very ill," but does not mention the gravity or nature of his illness.
Winterling was the only local meteorologist to correctly predict that Hurricane Dora would come ashore near Jacksonville in 1964.
Winterling worked at channel 4 for 47 years until he scaled back his duties in 2009. He still serves as the station's hurricane expert.
