FL. Gov. Rick Scott to propose legislation to fight opioid abuse

Its an attempt to curb opioid abuse in Florida. During a stop in the Tampa Bay area today, Florida Governor Rick Scott says he will invest 50 million dollars into the state budget and propose legislation to fight opioid abuse.

“As I travel the state, I have met many families who are dealing with the heartache of drug addiction.” Scott says.

He says the legislation will include placing a 3 day limit on prescribed opioids, unless strict conditions are met for a seven day supply. Requiring all healthcare professionals that prescribe or dispense medication to participate in a statewide database that monitors controlled substance prescriptions. Reforms to fight unlicensed pain management clinics, require continued education courses on responsibly prescribing opioids, and create new opportunities for federal grant funding.

“This is critical step toward limiting the chance of addiction, and reducing the ability for dangerous drugs to spread into our communities.” Governor Scott says.

The governor shed some light on what would be included in the $50 million investment as well. He says it would include funding for substance abuse treatment, counseling and recovery services, and more money to the Florida Violent Crime and Drug Control Council.

Governor Scott says he will propose the legislation in the upcoming session.
