Student charged with bringing gun to school

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A student has been taken into custody after a gun was found on Englewood High School’s campus Monday morning.

Law enforcement is investigating.

“Appropriate action including criminal charges and school discipline will take place,” Chirino said.

Students and staff were not hurt during the incident. Read the principal’s complete message below:

“Good Morning, Englewood Families; this is Principal Chirino calling with an important message.

I apologize for interrupting your day, but I want to make you aware of a security concern that occurred this morning. Our staff and security teams safely confiscated a firearm on our campus. It was thanks to tips from students that we learned the firearm was on campus. Once we received the tip, we placed the school on a lockdown to allow us to safety investigate and confiscate the item.

At this time, law enforcement is investigating and a student has been taken into custody. Appropriate action including criminal charges and school discipline will take place. Thankfully all students and staff remained safe throughout this incident, and we have lifted the lockdown and resumed a normal bell schedule.

As grateful as I am that this has been resolved, I am always disappointed to call you all with this type of news. Safety is the highest priority on this campus and we will continue to have enhanced security measures, including school-wide searches, for the remainder of the week. Please partner with us in keeping Englewood safe by monitoring what your children bring to school. Also, speak with them about the serious consequences that can result from bringing a firearm or weapon on campus. Remind them the importance of saying something if they see something, just like the students did today. By them sharing their security concerns, we were able to remove a security threat from campus. I appreciate their actions, and I thank you also for your support in keeping Englewood High School a safe and positive learning environment. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (904) 739-5212. Thank you and have a great afternoon.”
