Jacksonville, FL — Twice a year, the three local Navy bases come together for a big job fair. This time, there’s a very big qualifier that organizers are excited about.
“Employers must have jobs available. This is not an opportunity for employers to come and talk about what jobs may be open down the road six months to a year. In order to be in this job fair, they have to have available jobs right now, and some employers will be interviewing on site,” says Naval Station Mayport Fleet and Family Support Center Director Amie McKague.
Around 118 employers have signed up for the Tri-Base job fair, which serves anyone with a Department of Defense affiliation, but specifically targets veterans, transitioning service members, and their families at Mayport, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, and Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. It takes place Wednesday, September 5th, from 9AM to 2PM at the Morocco Shrine Center on St. Johns Bluff Road South.
Among the employers who will be there, McKague says they have everyone from Boeing to Waffle House, from the medical field to law enforcement, from local posts to jobs in other states.
“There are some elite employers coming that are certainly searching for long term careers, but we also have entry level customer service positions available as well,” she says.
Naval Facilities Engineering Command southeast says they have hundreds of federal job openings themselves, which range from professional posts like engineers, architects, and contract specialists to craftsman trade positions like electricians, carpenters, and boiler inspectors. Some of the positions are in Jacksonville, although the focus for them is Kings Bay, Key West, New Orleans, and Guantanamo Bay.
There will also be Fleet and Family Support staff from all three bases on site to help with last minute suggestions, including how to translate military experience in to skills the civilian workforce is looking for.
McKague is encouraging everyone who plans to attend the event to “dress for success”, bring plenty of resumes, and be prepared for on the spot interviews. NAVFAC is also recommending you bring college transcripts and veteran documentation.
