The days of having to drive all the way to Orlando just to visit IKEA will soon be over.
The world's leading home furnishings retailer has announced plans for a store in Jacksonville, off Gate Parkway and I-295 on the southside, not far from the St. Johns Town Center.
It would be the first IKEA in North Florida. There are only 41 IKEA stores in the U.S. Florida has four existing IKEA stores (Orlando, Tampa, Sunrise, and Sweetwater).
At a news conference IKEA officials said approximately 250 workers could join its family when new store opens.
Pending approvals construction could start next summer with the store opening in the fall of 2017. The proposed store would be 294,000 sq. ft.
A spokesperson for Mayor Lenny Curry says no tax incentives are being offered as part of IKEA's first Jacksonville store.
