Jacksonville, FL — A Jacksonville man has been caught stealing weapons from an unlocked car, and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is using that as a warning to remove valuables from your vehicle and make sure your doors stay locked.
JSO says 21-year-old Darian Hills was caught this morning wearing a skeleton mask and gloves. Police say he had a screwdriver and was testing car door handles to find unlocked vehicles. We’re told he found a loaded handgun in one vehicle and two knives in another, and was in possession of those weapons when he was caught.
JSO responded to a call about a suspicious man around 3AM on Hanson Drive in the Hyde Park area of the Westside, where they found Hills getting out of one of the unlocked vehicles. Police say he physically resisted an officer and refused commands. Hills allegedly headbutted the officer, but was taken in to custody when another officer got on scene and secured Hills in handcuffs. The arrest report says that during the struggle with officers, Hills reached for his waistband and something fell to the ground. After Hills was secured, officers found the gun on the ground, and believe that’s the only thing that could have made that sound.
Hills was previously arrested for armed burglary and unlawful possession of a firearm in November 2014. He was charged today with armed burglary, possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent, carrying a concealed firearm, two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of resisting with violence, and possession of burglary tools.
JSO has pushed the social media campaign #9PMRoutine to encourage people to check their cars every night to make sure they’ve removed weapons and valuables, and locked their doors.
