Jacksonville, FL — In honor of ‘National Equal Pay Day,’ Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry has issued a proclamation, officially declaring April 10th, 2018, ‘Equal Pay Day’ in Jacksonville.
As part of that proclamation, the City of Jacksonville is encouraging all citizens “to celebrate women in the workforce, acknowledge gender wage gap disparities, and participate in efforts to contribute to its elimination."
In addition, the proclamation expresses the city’s support to increase awareness of the needs of women in the workplace and to introduce girls to diverse career paths, including in STEM-based professions.
According to statistics from the American Association of University Women and released by the City of Jacksonville, North Florida women are likely to earn an average annual income between $3,584 and $9,804 less than men in the region.
In Jacksonville, there are 470,200 women, making up about 51.5% of the city's total population.
Equal Pay Day is recognized nationally each April to symbolize the number of days into the year that American women must work to earn what American men earned in the previous year.
