Jacksonville Police investigating multiple deadly shootings during first weekend of 2018

Jacksonville, Fl. — The first weekend of 2018 was a deadly one as Jacksonville Police continue to investigate at least four shooting deaths.

Patrol officers were called out to a home on Orton Street in the Hillcrest neighborhood early Saturday morning. They found a man in front of the home with one gunshot wound and was taken to U.F. Health where he later died.

According to police, there were people inside the home when shots were fired and they only reported hearing one gunshot. The victim was later identified as Mitchell McCoy. Officers did not have any suspect description and while there is no threat to the neighborhood, they are urging everyone to stay aware of their surroundings.

Hours later in the Woodstock area, officers were called out to a shooting near the Shell gas station at the intersection of Edgewood and Lowell Avenues.

Police say an attempted robbery may have occurred moments before the suspect pulled the trigger on Willie Dornes. Detectives with Jacksonville Police were interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video. There was no suspect description given in this case, JSO only said the shooter was not in a car.

Around 8 p.m. Saturday evening, Jacksonville Police responded to a person shot near the intersection of 16th and Myrtle in the Moncrief area. Officers say the victim was walking out of the Ethio Discount Food Store towards his car when someone approached him and began shooting.

The suspect took off in an unknown direction. The only suspect description police released was that he was a black man wearing all dark clothing. The victim has not been identified.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, police were called out to West 8th Street and found a man believed to be in his 20’s dead in the street. The victim has not been identified and there is no suspect information in this case.
