Jacksonville, FL — Two local utilities are warning their customers to be on alert for scam phone calls.
JEA says they've see a spike in scam phones calls recently, with at least 35 reports. JEA says scammers are calling customers and businesses, claiming to be from JEA. They then threaten to cut off service, unless you immediately buy a 'MoneyPak' card within 30 minutes and provide them with the card information and PIN.
JEA says the 800 number being used to make these fraudulent calls has already been reported. At least two of the numbers used to make these types of calls have already been taken down.
If you get one of these calls, you're urged to call JEA at (904) 665-6000. If you're a commercial customer, you can call (904) 665-6250 to speak with a JEA Business Support Team representative.
The Jacksonville Beach Police Department is also wanting to put Beaches Energy customers on alert, as a similar scam is targeting them as well.
Police say scammers are ‘spoofing’ an official Beaches Energy phone number and then telling customers their account is overdue and that they need to pay up immediately, via calling a 1-800 number.
If you get a call from someone claiming to be with Beaches Energy demanding immediate payment over the phone or via prepaid debit card, police say it’s a scam.
We're told customers receiving this type of call should hang up. If your account is truly past due, you will receive written notice of your account status with instructions.
