JEA Board postpones meeting on CEO termination details

Jacksonville, FL — The JEA Board has postponed a special meeting that was scheduled for Tuesday to review the termination details involving ousted CEO Aaron Zahn.  The City’s Office of General Counsel requested more time to review whether cause exists to terminate Zahn’s employment.  The decision could ultimately cost JEA more than $800,000 if it moves forward to terminate Zahn without cause.

In a letter to JEA Board Chair April Green, Deputy General Counsel Sean Granat said the office has conducted numerous interviews and reviewed thousands of documents.  He said there are several critical interviews that still need to be conducted and additional documents that need to be reviewed in order to complete a ‘fair, adequate, and thorough investigation’.  Granat said an additional two weeks should provide sufficient time.

The JEA Board voted unanimously on December 17th to begin the process of termination of Zahn's employment, and directed OGC to review details of his contract to determine whether he should be fired with cause or without cause. Until that recommendation is made, Zahn is suspended with pay on administrative leave.

Zahn’s compensation package if terminated without cause would pay him just over $842,000. Attorneys told the Board on Dec. 17 that an employees’ gross neglect of duties and obligations or willful misconduct would justify cause.

A JEA spokesperson says a rescheduled meeting date and time hasn’t been set.
