Jacksonville FL — Scammers are at it again and JEA says don’t become a victim. The utility tells us their call center is receiving hundreds of reports from customers who tell them they’ve been contacted by someone, claiming to be from JEA, threatening to disconnect their service if they don’t pay up with a gift card within 30 minutes. JEA says they will never demand that you buy a gift card to avoid having your service disconnected.
The utility says you can recognize these scams by the caller telling you that your bill is delinquent, or your utility meter needs to be replaced. Some other tips they have are if you’re given a short time frame to pay your bill or if you’re told to go to a big box store to buy a “MoneyPak” payment card or a gift card for a specific amount then call them back with a pin number to keep your service.
If you’ve received one of these types of calls you’re urged to tell JEA at 904-665-6000 or if you’re a commercial customer you can call 904-665-6250.
