JEA imploding two catalytic reactors this morning

Jacksonville FL — JEA is getting ready to implode two Selective Catalytic Reactors Friday morning at the St. Johns River Power Park on the northside. JEA says the two reactors are scheduled to come down at 8 in the morning.

The utility says unlike when the Cooling Towers came down last June, this time around there will not be as much dust like when the structures come down thanks to water that will be sprayed at the blast site. You could hear the noise from the blast up to a mile away, but it will depend on the wind and JEA says there won't be any road closures needed.

This implosion is part of the overall decommissioning of the plant which JEA says is now scheduled to be complete by the end of June next year, but that timeline is subject to change. JEA says once the plant is completely decommissioned it will reduce their carbon footprint by about 30%. At this time, the decommissioning process is about 40% complete with the next major event in the process being another implosion that should take place sometime this summer. JEA hasn't announced a specific date for that event yet.

This implosion won't have a public viewing area, so make sure you're listening to Jacksonville's Morning News Friday at 8 as we'll bring you live coverage of the structures coming down.

If you have any questions about the implosion JEA says you can call them at 904-665-7500 or email them at projectoutreach@jea.com.
