JEA warns of increase in scam calls

Jacksonville — JEA is warning customers of an uptick in reports that scammers are targeting JEA customers via phone, text message and email.

Reports are describing the scammers as very pushy. Payment through CashApp, Zelle or a personal check is requested to be completed within 30 minutes to avoid disconnection.

JEA says that its internal teams are working to shut the fraudulent numbers down. They’re asking those Jacksonville residents targeted to call, text or email them to confirm the legitimacy of any request. The number is 904- 665-6000.

JEA is also providing their customers with the following tips:

  • Never provide or confirm personal information, including one’s Social Security number and date of birth; or financial information - bank account and/or debit/credit card to anyone initiating contact with you, whether by phone, in-person, or email, claiming to be a utility company representative.
  • Never purchase a prepaid card or respond via a mobile payment app, (PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, etc.), to avoid service interruptions. JEA does not accept payments via cash apps.
  • Scammers can be very threatening. Customers should record the toll-free number, hang up and call JEA at (904) 665-6000.
  • Customers who feel that they are in physical danger should first call 911.
