Jacksonville, FL — An elderly woman is dead, after apparently accidentally leaving her car on in her garage, leading to an “extreme” build-up of carbon monoxide.
JSO says they were initially called to The Cottages at Greenland in Mandarin for a welfare check Friday around 3:30PM. They were met by several neighbors who complained they did not feel well and could smell fumes. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department also responded, and detected “extreme” levels of carbon monoxide in a condo.

JSO says it appears an 80-year-old woman accidentally left her car running and closed her garage, leading exhaust fumes to build up first in the garage and then to bleed in to her home. The woman was found dead in the condo. No foul play is suspected.
Two neighbors were taken to the hospital as a precaution, after reporting feeling ill. JSO says several children also complained they didn’t feel well, but nobody is considered to be in life-threatening condition.
JSO is investigating this as an accidental death.
