JSO: 17-year-old suspect charged with shooting death of K-9, armed kidnapping, and armed robbery

Jhamel Paskel (Jacksonville Sheriff's Office)

Jacksonville, FL — As the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office mourns the loss of one of their K-9s, investigators are identifying the suspect they say is responsible.

Jhamel Paskel, 17, is being charged with two counts of armed kidnapping, armed robbery, and killing a police dog, following his arrest on Sunday.

Police say he was initially being sought in connection to an armed carjacking and kidnapping at a gas station on Lem Turner Road that occurred in the early morning hours on Sunday.

JSO says there was a short pursuit involving Paskel, leading up to a foot chase.

During that chase, JSO says K-9 Fang was released after him and was able to catch him. However, police say Paskel then shot K-9 Fang in an attempt to get away.

Other officers were then able to take Paskel into custody. Police say he later confessed.

JSO tells us K-9 Fang's human partner is described as being very upset, as officers and their dogs have a very close relationship.
