Lang: 'I wasn't active in the crime'

Dominique Lang is a murder suspect at just 15 years old. He took the stand Thursday, appearing clean-cut and nervous.

Lang told the jury about the first day he met DeMarquise Elkins. He said it was the same day 13-month-old Antonio Santiago was shot between the eyes and killed.

Lang said Elkins asked him, "Did I ever rob somebody before?"

"What did you tell him?" asked Liberty Stewart, assistant district attorney.

"No," Lang replied.

Lang said Elkins flashed a gun, and was looking for someone to rob. Lang said that's when they saw Sherry West pushing a stroller through their Brunswick neighborhood.

Lang said Elkins confronted West.

"Like he walked up to her and asked her a question," Lang said.

"What did he ask her?" Stewart said.

"'Give me your purse,'" Lang said.

When she didn't, Lang said Elkins hit West in the face.

Lang said Elkins gave West another chance to hand over her purse. He counted down from five.

"And then he threatened the baby," said Lang.

After that, Lang said he heard three gunshots. He said he saw Elkins fire one shot to the ground. He said the second shot hit West in the leg. He said he didn't see where the third shot landed, but he knew the gun was aimed at the stroller.

The defense then started its cross-examination. Lang started to shut down.

Assistant public defender Jonathan Lockwood said to him, "You would have to agree that you're not the most honest type of person, wouldn't you?"

"Yes, sir," Lang said.

Lockwood started poking holes in his story, calling him a liar, saying he's just as guilty as Elkins, because Lang paid his aunt $5 to give Elkins a ride from the scene.

"So paying money for a murderer to leave, or to get away from the scene, is not wrong in your mind?" Lockwood asked.

"I didn't know he shot that baby at that time," Lang said.

Lang admitted he was walking with Elkins that day. He admitted he saw the baby's mother get shot. But he said he's an innocent bystander, because he didn't know Elkins was capable of killing a baby.

Lang and Elkins each face life sentences if convicted. Lang is set to get a trial of his own, despite talk he has made a deal with the state.

Elkins' mother, Karimah Elkins, is also on trial right now. She's accused of hiding the gun. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
