JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Juneteenth, a holiday marking the end of slavery, will be celebrated throughout Jacksonville over the weekend.

While not a federal or state holiday in Florida, it is a holiday that has gained recognition since the Civil Rights Movement.

FRIDAY

Juneteenth: Understanding and Celebrating 155 Years of Freedom

Time: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Where: 6 Ft. Away Gallery

Event Details: Many are unaware that there is a holiday that commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States, called Juneteenth. Celebrated first in Galveston,Texas in 1865 it has since spread and now in its 155th year we ask you to come share space with us for a special “Community Conversation” as we reflect and celebrate the freedom and independence of Black Americans.

Juneteenth Block Party

Time: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Where: 1818 N. Davis St.

Event Details: A block party celebrating Juneteenth sponsored by TeaPosh Naturals. There is a mask requirement and even a mask contest for whoever wears the best mask. There is an open mic for all artists, singers, and performers. There will also be herbal hookah sessions available for reservations.

8th Annual Juneteenth in Jacksonville

Time: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Where: Ritz Theatre and Museum

Event Details: Bring your family to the Ritz Theatre and Museum to see a BBQ Cookoff, vendors and entertainment, celebrate James Weldon Johnson’s birthday and celebrate Father’s Day. They are asking people to social distance and bring a mask. They will provide masks if you don’t have one.

Duval County Queer Pride Presents: Juneteenth

Time: 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Where: Archetype

Event Details: Duval County Queer Pride Presents: Juneteenth. This event features: Sweet Tea, Aysha B. Dupree, Gizelle Alexzandria Cliche, Tonya Marie Richardson, Toi Alexzandria, Constance, and DJ geexella. Ticket prices are $10 to $20. Those who attend are encouraged to bring tips for the performers. Safety precautions: Masks are required and temperature checks will be done at the door.

SATURDAY

Juneteenth Freedom Walk/Celebration

Time: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: Newnaan and Bay Street/Ritz Theatre and Museum

Event Details: The MLK Memorial Foundation is holding a freedon walk starting at Bay and Newnan Streets and ending at the Duval County Courthouse. The celebration will continue at the Ritz Theatre from noon to 5 p.m. They are asking people to social distance and bring a mask. They will provide masks if you don’t have one.
