Massive fire in Nassau County causes significant damage to a local business, several boats nearby

Jacksonville, FL — More than thirty firefighters with the Fernandina Beach Fire Department and Nassau County Fire Rescue were called to a fire at Egans Creek Marina early Friday morning.

Robert Westhouse said he was in bed when the fire broke out around midnight.

“All I could see out my window was 100-foot-high flames, roaring fire,” Westhouse said.

When firefighters got there, they found heavy smoke coming from a building and flames shooting in the air.

“They only had one or two hydrants, so they only had one hose to really fight it with,” Westhouse said.

A Nassau County spokesperson told Action News Jax the building is used by a local company that builds athletic netting for ball fields.

Firefighters battled flames for about four hours.

A building that once stood on the property is now gone and several boats were damaged in the fire, including a yacht.

Action News Jax spotted three fire investigators on the scene, surveying damage and looking for anything suspicious.

Westhouse is hoping the fire wasn’t set.

“It’s interesting because a year ago there was a fire across the street at the other marina, so I don’t know what’s happening up here with these marinas,” he said.

No one was hurt in the fire

Action News Jax is working to learn how much it will cost for repairs and if arson is suspected.
