Jacksonville, FL — The turnout at Jacksonville’s “Food for Florida” location Wednesday was so large, that the Florida Department of Children and Families declared themselves at capacity only about four hours after opening.
DCF Spokesperson John Harrell says they will help everyone, but the crowd today is a public safety concern. Today was supposed to be the day for anyone with a last name starting with A-D in Duval and Nassau counties to come out to the Regency Square Mall to register. Harrell says anyone who isn’t there can some to the makeup day October 17th.
DCF has a full breakdown of who they're asking to come, when, and where across Northeast Florida, posted on their website. The Regency Square Mall will be open through the 17th, while the St. Augustine Fairgrounds is open for Flagler and St. Johns counties through the 15th. Baker County residents can be served at the Parkview Baptist Church in Lake City October 20-23. There is no active site serving Clay County at this time.
You can also pre-register for this program- the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program- on that same DCF website. This can speed along the process at the registration site.
The Food for Florida program provides emergency food benefits to victims of disasters- in this case, Hurricane Irma. It deals with those who do not get food benefits through the regular SNAP program, although some income and asset requirements do apply. You need to have lived or worked in one of the counties covered by FEMA’s Individual Assistance declaration and suffered disaster-related loss.
