"Bubba" the lottery winner in St. Johns County has finally come forward.
The Florida Lottery Commission says Jerry Danforth and his wife chose the lump sum payment of 13 million dollars.
He bought the winning ticket at Weedman's Grocery on State Road 13 in St. Johns County last month.
Danforth and his wife say they are trustees of the "Bubba Living Trust".
Here is the official release from the Florida Lottery Commission:
The Florida Lottery today announced that Jerry Danforth, 61, trustee of The Bubba Living Trust, claimed a share of the $40 million FLORIDA LOTTOâ„¢ jackpot from the drawing held on August 17, 2011. Jerry and Cathy Danforth are the beneficiaries of The Bubba Living Trust.
The Bubba Living Trust chose the one-time, lump-sum payment for the winnings in the amount of $12,929,733.35. The winning FLORIDA LOTTO Quick Pick ticket was purchased at Weedman Grocery, located at 4925 State Road 13 North in St. Augustine. The retailer received a bonus incentive of $60,000 for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.
According to Danforth, he has been playing FLORIDA LOTTO since the game's inception in 1988. Danforth found out he won the next day when he took his ticket to the retailer to check his numbers. "The store clerk's eyes got real big and she said I won. I thought she was joking with me at first, but she kept saying 'no, really you won'," Danforth said. Danforth plans to continue playing FLORIDA LOTTO and hopes to win the jackpot again. "You've got to play to win it," he said.
Total ticket sales for this jackpot generated more than $33 million for the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund (EETF). The next FLORIDA LOTTO drawing will be held Saturday, September 3, at 11:15 p.m. ET, with a $9 million jackpot. FLORIDA LOTTO drawings are broadcast on 17 carrier stations throughout the state, and are available for viewing on the Florida Lottery website. Winning numbers are available on the Lottery website, at retailers statewide and by phone at (850) 921-PLAY.
Florida voters, by a two-to-one margin, approved a constitutional amendment in 1986 authorizing the state to operate a lottery for the purpose of generating significant additional moneys for education. To date, the Florida Lottery has funded Bright Futures scholarships for more than 500,000 Florida students to attend college in our state. Floridians continue to show their support by purchasing billions of dollars in Lottery products per year, resulting in contributions of more than $22 billion to the EETF since 1988.
