A missing Bradford County woman is now safe, and the man accused of taking her is dead of a self-inflicted gunshot.
The Bradford County Sheriff’s Office first asked the public for help finding Melissa Infinger on Saturday. She had last been heard from Friday. Then, yesterday, investigators asked for help locating James Busbee, who was from Baker County but hadn’t been seen since Friday night as well. He has a history of mental illness, according to the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office, and he was previously been in a relationship with Infinger.
Now, the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office confirms Infinger is safe.
We’re told BCSO for information about the vehicle involved possibly being in Taylor County. The Sheriff’s Office there responded to the Steinhatchee River Inn and found the vehicle. Investigators determined which room the two were believed to be in, and when they entered, we’re told Busbee armed himself with a handgun.
Deputies were able to get Infinger out of the room, but following a brief standoff, Busbee shot himself in the head. He was life-flighted to the hospital, with first responders determining he initially survived the gunshot. Since then, BCSO says Busbee has died of his injury.
Detectives believe Infinger was taken from her home Saturday morning at gunpoint. They were initially heading toward Tampa, but then diverted to Taylor County. BCSO is still investigating, to determine what happened since Infinger’s last contact Friday night.
